All'inizio del terzo millennio la crisi economica ha dilagato nell'occidente europeo dal 2008, l'economia che conta ha spinto in una direzione unica: la finanza. Un ventennio di spietate ed aggressive politiche economiche e sociali, un ventennio di scellerata amministrazione delle risorse nazionali, ci hanno portato al fallimento. Una società fondata, in origine, sul lavoro è stata destrutturata, la delocalizzazione delle industrie all'estero prima e la stretta economico-finanziaria in corso da anni hanno indebolito e messo in crisi il già malato "sistema paese". Le aziende trasportate all'estero unito ad una certa cecità economico-imprenditoriale praticata nella nazione hanno indebolito l'economia di tipo familiare prima, e micro-imprenditoriale poi, alla base dello sviluppo del paese Italia.
Con le classi dirigenti e la politica che investono nella finanza aggressiva e speculativa, si hanno accentramenti di potere ad una ristretta oligarchia finanziaria che può influenzare i mercati. L'economia di questo paese ha giocato nevroticamente la sua partita su molti tavoli da "gioco" contemporaneamente, la politica, l'illegalità diffusa, le rapaci e dissanguanti politiche del credito in una società dove il lavoro riduce in schiavitù, e l'economia che deriva dalla produzione non garantisce a sufficienza la dignità umana, deprime anche il mercato dei consumi.
La dimensione psicologica collettiva in periodo di recessione prende la china del pessimismo. La società riflette e si interroga nelle incertezze della vita privata, dilagano incertezze e paure. L'idea che in futuro non avremo un mondo migliore è dilagata nel 80% della società. Le idee propagate sono pessimiste e non inclini alla positività nel futuro. La rapacità della politica nel divorare denaro con politiche di potentato e corruttela, poltrone, incarichi, finanziamenti, forti interessi nelle aziende di stato, nelle banche, nel limite oscuro che confina con la delinquenza organizzata, la società non esiste più, è in balia di corrotti amministratori e mercati finanziari.  Non sempre nel passato la qualità della vita era migliore dell'attuale ma le epoche storiche non sono paragonabili.  
Non abbiamo avuto una classe politica in grado di governare la società civile nei cambiamenti storici, tutti pagheremo gli errori di aver accettato di essere governati da mediocri e incompetenti anche se non li abbiamo scelti personalmente. Una generazione di politici, imbarbariti dal denaro e privi dei nobili principi della politica, politici schiavi del potere economico e non solo, che hanno travasato nelle tasche di alcuni un immenso flusso di denaro, impoverendo sostanzialmente le capacità imprenditoriali sane e tutta la società. C'è da rassegnarsi alla fine di un'epoca, fine che è stata preceduta da una connivenza preoccupante tra maggioranza e opposizione, perfettamente identiche negli interessi come apparentemente opposti nella demagogia. Tutto finto, la società perde coscienza e scivola nell'ìmbarbarimento mentre una percentuale ristretta della società fa proliferare il denaro e la piovra del potere.
Il potere politico ha tagliato i fondi alla scuola pubblica, alle università, alla ricerca scientifica, alla possibilità di progredire, in definitiva anche al fare profitto attraverso il progresso della scienza, delle idee, della tecnica, dell'industria, della produzione dei beni.
Il potere politico ha spento l'intelligenza intellettuale non "allineata" ideologicamente al potere dominante, tagliando i fondi, togliendo denaro pubblico alle attività culturali, oscurando chi non è gradito. Sono state finanziate e promosse solo le iniziative di "simpatizzanti", amici. Le intelligenze intellettuali sono perfettamente sterilizzate.
E' venuta meno nella società la coscienza di cosa sta accadendo, sappiamo che la direzione è sbagliata ma non abbiamo fatto niente, anestetizzati dallo strapotere della politica. L'Italia è il paese di Francesco Guicciardini, Niccolò Macchiavelli, Giuseppe Mazzini, non avere memoria storica ci costerà caro.
Siamo davanti al fallimento economico e politico, non possiamo più permetterci di vivere come prima, e mentre stiamo scivolando abbiamo affidato la guida del paese a chi ha arricchito a dismisura il proprio patrimonio economico finanziario nel trentennio precedente.
Per trenta anni è mancata nella società italiana la consapevolezza della propria condizione, dei propri mezzi, dei propri limiti e oggi siamo falliti.
